Purpose and added value
The aim of the cluster is to enable companies to enter the international biotechnology ecosystem, where they can develop innovations faster, establish strategic partnerships, and access new business and research opportunities. The cluster addresses key challenges for companies, such as access to international partners, research capacities, regulatory knowledge, and sources of funding, and connects them in a structured and supportive environment.
Key activities and content
In the first phase, 39 joint development projects were identified, among which two central development pillars stand out:
- NEUROEPO, a project in the field of neurological treatment,
- The Center for Bioequivalence Studies, dedicated to the development and testing of biopharmaceutical solutions.
In the second phase, the cluster focuses on the final establishment of priority projects and the operation of four thematic working groups:
- capacity building,
- partnerships, international relations, and resource mobilization,
- regulatory issues,
- virtual biotechnology incubator.
An important part of the activities is also the mobilization of funds from European and international programs (e.g., Horizon Europe, EU4Health), joint applications to calls for proposals, organization of expert workshops, and promotion of projects at international forums, fairs, and investment events.
Digital platform and international dimension
The central infrastructure point of the cluster is the digital platform Biopharma Global Connect, led by the Slovenian COBIK. The platform enables international networking, presentation of projects, and partner search, and is expanding to additional countries in the second phase, including Africa, Vietnam, and Canada.
Partners
The cluster brings together numerous Slovenian research and academic institutions, including the Faculty of Pharmacy UL, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology UL, and COBIK, as well as Slovenian biotechnology companies such as Acies Bio, Labena, BioSistemika, Jafral, Sartorius Bia, and others. International partners include reputable institutions and companies from Cuba, Brazil, Vietnam, Canada, and interested companies from African countries.
Project goal
The purpose of the project is to establish a strong, globally connected biotechnology network that supports research, development, and commercialization of advanced technologies and increases the international visibility of the included Slovenian companies.
